BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW

This workshop was designed to draw together the technical and research expertise of current practitioners in the Australian e-Humanities field, allowing them to identify needs, refine current understandings of issues pertinent to digital resource creation and use, and explore the potential of such resources to generate fresh, innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to humanities research activity.

The workshop was specifically convened to refine a proposal led from the University of Sydney for establishment of the Australian e-Humanities Research Network. In order to demonstrate the importance to the University of both the proposal and of e-Humanities research activity generally, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences agreed to underwrite the workshop so that planning of the event could proceed prior to confirmation of the outcomes of the seed funding round. This was a welcome and worthwhile expression of support, and allowed the funds ultimately awarded by the ARC to be put to timely use.

The direction and shape of the Network proposal has benefited greatly from the advice and energy contributed by those attending the workshop, who came from a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • Archaeology
  • Architecture
  • Computer Science
  • Design
  • History
  • Information Management
  • Law
  • Linguistics
  • Media and Communications
  • Literary studies
  • Musicology
  • Philosophy
  • Scholarly editing and academic publishing
